Bushwick Loft – Live/Work Renovation

Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY

Project Summary

Boerum Street Loft – Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY

Set inside a converted industrial building in the heart of Bushwick, this live/work loft was designed to support both creative production and daily life. The client—a filmmaker and installation artist—needed a space that could flex between roles: part home, part gallery, part workspace. We preserved the bones of the original warehouse, including exposed concrete floors, high ceilings, steel beams, and ductwork, then layered in a new program of light partitions, suspended lighting, and custom millwork to define zones without closing off flow.

The design centers around a steel staircase and mezzanine that lead to a lofted sleeping area, leaving the ground floor open for production, client meetings, and studio work. Materials are raw and intentional—wood, steel, glass—punctuated by plants and curated artwork. Storage is hidden within the structure of built-ins, and lighting was reworked to transition seamlessly from task to ambient. The result is a live/work space that never feels split between functions—it’s unified, nimble, and deeply expressive of its neighborhood context.

Project Highlights

  • Scope: Interior renovation and live/work space planning

  • Features:

    • Full-height ceilings and exposed infrastructure left intentionally visible

    • Custom steel stair leads to mezzanine sleeping loft with private views

    • Open ground floor functions as studio, gallery, and living space

    • Polished concrete floors and whitewashed brick maintain raw character

    • Curtain partitions and lighting zones create intimacy without enclosure

Design Notes

  • Inspired by Bushwick’s creative roots and warehouse legacy

  • The space is designed to evolve: part home, part production studio, part gallery

  • Minimalist interventions highlight structure rather than hide it

Testimonial (optional)

“David helped us unlock the space’s full potential — we didn’t want drywall and doors. We wanted flexibility, clarity, and light. He gave us all of it.”
